Synopsis

The date is now December 24th. Imani stands in front of the class, having finished recounting a folktale about the origin of tinsel on Christmas trees. With school now truly in session, she begins to take attendance, with the girls clarifying that, not counting the now-expected absence of Sensei and Ami, only Chika and Rin are missing. Taking note of these answers, Imani tells the class to spend the time until lunch doing whatever, being notably lower-energy than usual. The subsequent chatter from the girls reveals that Sensei's all but vanished following the class' Halloween party, with no one hearing from him at all.

Throughout the class, the girls all deal with Sensei's continued absence in their own ways:

• Uta and Io talk amongst themselves about how obviously somber everyone's been since Sensei stopped showing up. Even Io is feeling the effects of long-term separation, having upped her medicine's dosage to deal with the anxiety, and going so far as to speak to Ami of her own volition. After sharing their respective failures regarding visiting him, Io remarks that nothing short of orchestrating a kidnapping is likely to return things to normal.
• Noriko wraps up a conversation with Yumi, the latter caught off guard by the sudden attention. Noriko explains that, since they bonded at the class' Halloween party, the two of them are friends now. This annoys Yumi, but she's unable to push Noriko away as Chika and Rin both step into class and divert everyone's attention.
• Chika and Rin's entrance into the classroom reveals that the two girls have swapped their hair colors. While Rin cites a need for change, Chika claims it's due to wanting to fit in with the other members of the Light Music Club, not-so-subtly hinting at a persistent identity crisis spurred on Sensei's absence.
• Rin takes the opportunity to throw passive-aggressive shade towards Otoha, revealing that the two have broken up since Sensei's departure. While it was seemingly mutual, Sana still pries into the details, whilst Nodoka simply seizes the opportunity to flirt. Otoha clarifies their separation was due to her choosing her music over a relationship, an explanation Sana is noticeably dissatisfied with. Pivoting the conversation, Otoha asks the girls if they think Sensei will show up for Christmas this year, and each of the girls expresses hope that tonight will spell the end of his two-month-long absence. Nodoka teases her for being so openly worried, but Otoha clarifies that, just like everyone else, she wants to know if he's okay and wonders why she's the one who has to say it out loud, with her friends giving different reasons as to why.
