Io isn't sure how she will come across when she introduces herself to the class, and wonders whether Sensei will try to change her if she's anything less than what he wants. He says that it would depend on what she wanted, and that since they've only had three conversations — all completely different — he doesn't really know who she is yet. She says that she wouldn't blame him if he cancelled the transfer, calling herself trash. She tells him that she'll try to put on a smile during her introduction, and try to "assimilate" by faking an interest in things, but that she might wind up walking out halfway through. This is exactly what happens. When Sensei finds her in the hall, Io says that her "normal-girl act" isn't as polished as she thought. In her view, getting close to people means having to deal with their problems, and she doesn't want to take on projects like that. She warns him that her own problems make her "like ten projects", and asks if he really wants to get to know her after she has "done nothing but say things that would scare a normal person away". He says that he would.
